When the Arapahoe School opened in Denver, Colo. in 1873, the school served Denver School District No. 1 as both a grade and high school. By 1875 there was a separate high school section in the school, with its own principal, called Denver High School. The high school remained in the Arapahoe School building until 1881 when it relocated to an annex on Stout Street. By 1889 there was a separate building at 19th and Stout Streets for the high school. For about ten years, one wing of this building contained a public library maintained by the school district with John Cotton Dana as librarian. The high school was called at various times: East Denver High School, East Side High School, or the Denver High School, East Side. In 1925 the old building was demolished and a new East High School building was opened at 1600 City Park Esplanade near the intersection of Detroit Street and Colfax Avenue.
