B. Dec. 31, 1885, Pueblo, Colo. Graduated from East High School (Denver) and Cornell University. Opened investment business, Newton and Co. in 1909. Was assistant executive secretary of the Federal Reserve Board during WW I. After war, formed his own company which later merged with Boettcher and Company. Served on State Relief Committee, Public Housing Authority and the Colorado Defense Council. Belonged to many organizations and clubs. Son, James Quigg Newton, Jr. served as Mayor of Denver, 1947-1955. D. March 1944, Denver, Colo.

Collection contains business and personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, publications, brochures, financial records, Colorado Council of Defense records. Photographs contain views of mining in Idaho, the Southwestern Portland Cement Co. in Victorville, Calif. Images of Havana, Cuba: the Casino Nacional, 5th Avenue in central Havana, the Oriental Race Track, the Havana Yacht Club and a view of the lighthouse and Fort San Cristobal in Havana Harbor.
