Bio/Organization Note:	Frontier Methodist minister and army officer. Played a critical role in defeating confederate forces at the Civil War battle of Glorietta (1862). In November, 1864, led a regiment of the Colorado Volunteers to the Cheyenne's Sand Creek Reservation where troops killed between 100 and 200 Cheyenne (later known as the "The Sand Creek Massacre").
Summary:	Collection contains correspondence, reports, newspaper clipping concerning Chivington's ministerial, military and political careers; much of the correspondence was sent to General L.W. Colby who was investigating the Sand Creek Massacre for a court case in 1892. Collection also available on microfilm (C MSS Mflm173).
